Overall Objective

The objective is to improve the capacity to support entrepreneurship, business survival and competition in the field of wine production in the cross-border area

Summary of the Project

The phenomenon of agricultural abandonment (and the concomitant economic activities) in the targeted area of the project is widespread. The project idea was based on the needs of the project beneficiaries in relation mainly to viticulture and wine production. The needs concern both

a) the promotion of local viticulture and wine production in order to attract new entrepreneurs;

b) the establishment of the wine trade in the cross-border area.

Activities

  • 2 studies concerning the external & internal wine business sector environment;
  • Cataloguing and commercial evaluation of local wine varieties (Zitsa-Amyntaio-Korce);
  • Assesment of the cross-border and international commercial networks of wine products;
  • Web GIS platform for wine varieties & production units (Zitsa-Amyntaio-Korce);
  • Local (Zitsa-Amyntaio) & regional (Korce) operational plans for the reuse of abandoned vineyards;
  • Spatial analysis & classification of Local Wine Production Zones (including abandoned) using drones and ICT mapping tools;
  • Recording & investigation of genetic variability (indigenous grape varieties in Zitsa-Amyntaio-Korce);
  • Developing business & financial planning tools of a “Smart Wine Production Unit” (Zitsa-Amyntaio-Korce);
  • Pilot/demonstration projects for smart production of grapevines (Zitsa-Amyntaio-Korce);
  • Developing a database of best practices on Smart Wine Production & Viticulture;
  • 3 info-kiosks;
  • Organisation of a cross-border wine exhibition;
  • Registration in the National Intangible Heritage Indexes (UNESCO, Art.12) concerning Traditional Local Viticulture & Wine production;
  • Organisation of joint thematic business seminars;
  • Organisation of 4 thematic agro-seminars;
  • Mapping the sustainability of the project results.

Expected Results

  • Over 100 wine and viticulture enterprises in the cross-border area supported from the project’s expected outputs
  • Improved cross-border business cooperation through joint wine exhibitions
  • Future investments produce tangible and visible results in wine production and viticulture
  • At least 200 new interested entrepreneurs trained in wine production techniques and viticulture
  • At least 20 local traditional viticulture and wine production techniques demonstrated on-site
  • 5 user-friendly ICT tools developed and available for use
  • WINCOME serves as best practice and contemporary business development model for Less Favoured Areas
